The Southside study group focuses on the following weapons: longsword, sword-and-shield, sword-and-buckler, dagger, spear (and other polearms), stick, staff and unarmed combat. We focus on the following fight manuals from Medieval and Renaissance masters: the Codex Wallerstein, Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly Art of the Longsword, the fighting manuals of Joachim Meyer and the unarmed combat of Nicolaes Petter and Johann Passchen. Of course, with such a vast subject, other fight manuals are consulted.

Practice sessions begin with breathing and stretching exercises, then progress to practice drilling techniques unique to ARMA. Falling, rolling and tumbling techniques are also taught and practiced every session as part of our curriculum.

ARMA practice sessions usually involve sparring/free fighting as well. It is impossible to learn any combat system, much less one based on fighting with cold steel weapons, without actually fighting a resisting opponent. As Bruce Lee once said when witnessing a board breaking demonstration: "Boards… don't hit back."

Safety is the primary concern when sparring/free fighting and safety equipment is provided to all students.

The ARMA Southside study group is led by Gene P. Tausk. He may be reached at (713) 550-4636 or farsight187@yahoo.com.
